Designing a Table to Express Unity and Idealism

The Unity table stands out with its unique features and design. The top of the table is hand-etched with a conceptual representation of the world map, intricately woven with longitude and latitude markings. This delicate weave symbolizes the interconnectedness of the world and the importance of unity. The table's base is made of solid rosewood and is hand-carved in the shape of a drum, inspired by the traditional instrument, the tabla, used in local Sufi music songs of peace. The two mediums are held together by a solid brass ring, further emphasizing the unity and harmony represented by the table.

Creating the Unity table is a meticulous process that involves skilled craftsmanship. Each piece is handcrafted, taking 45 days to construct. The materials used include rosewood veneers, solid brass, solvent stains, and a high gloss polyurethane top coat. The result is a table that not only showcases the beauty of Pakistani craftsmanship but also promotes unity and peace through its design.

The Unity table has specific technical specifications. The brass ring has a thickness of 50.8 mm, and the dimensions of the table are 1219.2 mm in diameter and 419.1 mm in height.

The development of the Unity table took place in Karachi, Pakistan, in 2017. The design team, led by Sarah Najmi Bilgrami, Syed Zayd Bilgrami, and Ahsan Najmi, conducted extensive research to create a piece that would not only appeal to luxury residential interiors and yacht interiors but also tell a compelling story of unity and peace. The team drew inspiration from the formation of the tabla instrument and incorporated elements of Sufi traditions to create a design that would stand out in any high-end space.

One of the challenges faced by the design team was to create a piece that would fit seamlessly into luxury interiors while conveying a powerful message of unity and peace. By combining their research with the use of solid rosewood, polyurethane lacquer, and solid brass, the team successfully created a table that tells a story while maintaining an aesthetic that complements surrounding high-design furniture.

It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018, which honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. This award recognizes the table's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.
